was a much smaller city than it is today. Eugene and Eartha lived in what is now Central City. Their world extended about 30 blocks on the uptown side of Canal Street. On the downtown side, it included the 7th Ward to the Industrial Canal. Eartha had never crossed St. Charles Street. In this book, she is surprised that the banquettes (sidewalks) are old and being broken by tree roots, but impressed by the huge mansions in this one section. She remains unaware of the Irish section and the German section, and has no interest. Lafayette (the part of today’s city that began at the end of the American section which started at Canal Street. Lafayette ended at Felicity Street.) had become a part of New Orleans. The city of Carrollton had also been added to New Orleans. She had seen neither.

Eugene’s expanded knowledge of the city comes with his first visit to the lake that he had never seen before. People of Color were only invited to the amusements of Lake Pontchartrain as maids, wait staff, and musicians. During Mardi Gras, he gets to see the rest. There were other amusement sections of the city closer to downtown along the Battlefield (a pirate section of the city near what is now South Galvez and Perdido Streets). Boats entered Bayou St. John from Lake Pontchartrain.
